Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir S&B Selection
The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is renowned for both its historical significance and the unsurpassed quality of the fruit it produces. First planted in 1971, this sustainably farmed vineyard is home to the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Santa Barbara County. This vineyard is rich with calcium enriched clay loam soils, fractured shale and chert. This complex array of alluvial soils have accumulated over millions of years at the base of these foothills, an extension of the Santa Ynez Mountains which run west towards the Ocean.
Vinous 94 points.
The 2019 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict, S&B Selection is a clonal selection from a block located in the heart of Sanford and Benedict. It shows a decidedly floral aromatic of this site. There is something very Old World about this 2019. It’s a Pinot that is more about aromatics than overt fruit or body”. Vinous 94 Points.
Winemaker’s notes: My love of Pinot Noir comes from the haunting perfume that this varietal is so well known for. The texture of a wine is also a big part of how a wine translates to your pallet. Like a beautiful painting, the frame around the artwork can be a very important part of the presentation. Dried roses, blood orange, plum, and complex spices meld together into a rich and expansive wine. What is so notable about this vineyard site is how it accentuates its wonderful saline ocean-like component. Alongside the dusty tannins, it extends the length of the finish without adding a hint of weight. Only 15% new French oak was utilized. You can age this Pinot, but with a quick decant I think you will be happy. Only ONE Barrel Produced.
